Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus)

red bellied woodpecker.jpg

With a black and white striped back, pale reddish belly and brilliant red cap, Red-Bellied Woodpecker is very easy to spot. They can be found mostly in forests flying erratically (possibly an evasive maneuver) from tree to tree. They will occasionally visit feeders and urban trees. Even though they mainly eat insects they are not picky and will eat seeds, berries and fruit. Red-Bellied has a forked tongue that can extend up to two inches beyond the tip of it's beak to grab dinner from a wooden cavity. The beak drumming is used as a song.
