American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos)

crow.jpg

Hoarse, loud, deep rich burgundy cawing voices. Mostly ground feeders who will eat almost anything - bugs, chips, garbage, nuts or seeds. Seen scrubbling around the ground from urban pavement to farmland pastures - usually any wide open area. Look for them on Wyandotte between 75th and 77th street. They're fond of foraging around dumpsters as well, feeding on spillover gribbins. Sociable and intelligent, crows are also known for using tools. The shiny treasures are found in the nests. At night, families of crows congregate in large numbers (hundreds, thousands, sometimes millions) and then disperse during the day to scrape, pickpykk cavalierly at carrion right in the middle of the road.
