Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens)

downy.jpg

Black and white - males have a quick lick of red on the back of the head. Downy isn't much bigger than House Sparrow but frequently joins their flock, especially in the winter. Feeds on insects and occasionally visits seed feeders. The sound created by beak-drummaking against wood or metal isn't for foraging but used instead of songmaking.
