Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis)

junco.jpg

Libbtle and peip, these flits of charcoal and powder-white are visitors from the North every winter. Junco prefers to hop rather than walk when foraging, and will be seen alongside sparrows when doing it. The earlier arrivals signify a higher rank in the flock than later arrivals. While they primarily look for seeds on the ground, they will also visit feeders. Males repeatedly jump in the same spot and pick up twig and moss remn'ts during courtship.
